Based in New York City, Cantor Marjory Appel has had a lifelong passion for Jewish music. She became an ordained Cantor following graduation from Jewish Spiritual Leaders Institute in New York City. Cantor Marjory is also a member of the Women Cantor’s Network.
As part of her mission to bring the music of prayer to those who lack access, Cantor Marjory leads worship at Atria 86 senior center and at a prison facility in New York City. She also serves as a hospital Chaplain at Weill Cornell Hospital. Cantor Marjory recently led High Holidays worship as Guest Cantor at Temple Beth Israel in Plattsburgh, New York.
Before her ordination, Cantor Marjory was an active member of Central Synagogue’s Congregational Choir, and sung with the Yiddish Philharmonic Chorus, while pursuing a decades-long career, first as an attorney, and then as a communications and marketing executive. In the years prior to her ordination, Cantor Marjory served as Chief Marketing Officer of JDC, the global Jewish humanitarian organization, and as Chief Marketing & Communications Officer of The Recycling Partnership, the leading non-governmental organization dedicated to building a better recycling system.
In addition to her Cantorial work, Cantor Marjory has served as an Adjunct Professor at George Washington University School of Law.
Cantor Marjory is a graduate of Cornell University, holds a master’s degree in International Studies from Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies and a J.D. degree from Tulane Law School. She and her husband have three daughters, and a daughter-in-law.
